If you think Hitman: Absolution is a stealth-’em-up game, you’d be…not quite right. At its heart, Hitman: Absolution is a puzzle game, one that involves setting up multiple sequences of events with perfect timing. Like any puzzle, get one piece wrong, and your hard work falls into disarray. Get it right, and you’re a master of assassination, a puppeteer pulling multiple strings at once. At times I felt I had become death, destroyer of worlds (or at least South Dakota).

In the long-running BBC show Doctor Who, our eponymous hero flits around time and space curtailing the spread of evil, defending the human race, and according to the first trailer for “The Snowmen,” prevents all the children in the world from ever having bad dreams. But it seems as if he won’t be living up to his responsibilities in the latter task, because if the trailer is anything to go by, some children who watch this are in danger of having nightmares.

The great thing about many open-world games is that they give you the freedom to play however you want. Take Dishonored. There, you can play non-lethally or you can leave a trail of dismembered bodies as you murder up Dunwall.
