John Carter was a wonderful, completely underrated film with terrific characters and equally terrific special effects. Animator Patrick Giusiano, who had worked for Double Negative Visual Effects under Pixar’s supervision, had obviously put painstaking effort into making those special effects as lifelike as possible.
In this video, below, Giusiano shows us his process for making the unreal real. First, he shows a clip of the action, then he breaks the “workflow” down for us.
Whaddya know? It turns out that Hollywood magic is actually Hollywood science.
