To celebrate the fact that Guild Wars 2 (GW2) is back on sale, ArenaNet has released a video to welcome new players to the world of Tyria. Unfortunately, the only world that this video has welcomed me to is a dystopia.
In this video, directed by James McTeigue (the first assistant director of The Matrix and others), most of the 2 minutes, 16 seconds here is spent watching 1) a man covered in dried mud, 2) a fence-jumping graffiti artist, and 3) a disheartened firewalker–none of whom appear in GW2. Only about twenty seconds of this video show the game in any way, but there was no gameplay.
It was a mistake to spend all of that time on non-game-related material. It was an even worse mistake to use that utterly generic voice over.
I really enjoyed GW2. But you know how you hate it when the promo of a game is better than the game itself? At least with this video, you’ll be satisfied knowing that the game is vastly superior.
Check it out, if you must.
