Take a look at this picture of actress Noomi Rapace (via L.A. Times). It’s from the upcoming Ridley Scott movie, Prometheus. And it’s scaring the hell out of me.
One of the reasons I adored the Alien movies (well, some of them, anyway) is because of the otherworldly yet completely believable look of the xenomorphs and the environment they crafted around themselves. We owe that look to artist H.R. Giger, who made such as splash (of innards) that he won the Academy Award for Best Achievement for Visual Effects in 1980.
People who know more about art than me refer to Giger’s work as “biomechanical.” I refer to it as “the stuff of nightmares.”
And here it is, on screen: the secreted resinous hive that all but shouts, “Xenomorphs wuz here.”
