Season 2 of Game of Thrones is less than two weeks away. The new Prometheus trailer looks absolutely amazing. The Snow White and the Huntsman trailer looks mighty fine too. Can geek life get any better than this? If you’re a fan of Joss Whedon then yes. Yes, it can. Because Joss is about to open up a can of awesome (and probably kill a beloved character with the contents).
What do Whedon fans want besides more seasons of the tragically cancelled Firefly, and perhaps an apology for the way he so cruelly offed Joyce (and Fred. And Tara. And Wash)? We want to see a sequel for Dr. Horrible’s Sing-A-Long Blog. Dr. Horrible is a three-part web series that chronicled the adventure of Billy (Neil Patrick Harris), an evil genius who has a crush on good-girl Penny (Felicia Day). Vying for her affection is Captain Hammer (played with cheesy goodness by Nathan Fillion). A sequel to the web series has seemed unlikely; after all, Joss filmed Dr. Horrible to pass the time during the 2007-2008 Writer’s Guild strike. Filming a sequel would take away from some actual paying work.
But now it looks like we might get to see it after all.
According to Wired, Whedon is looking to shoot Dr. Horrible 2 this summer.
Whedon, who didn’t offer much detail on the plot of the new iteration of the web series, said the biggest roadblock to unleashing a Dr. Horrible sequel — besides his need to get back into songwriting mode — has been aligning everyone’s schedules for the next installment of the indie hit.
“We’re stuck, basically, at this one part in the process,” Whedon said. “All of us are looking at this summer as the time when we can go, ‘Hey, you know what? We’ve got a little free time, let’s get unstuck.’ Neil has been like, ‘How long?’ We’re all sort of just waiting, but the waiting will stop.”
Did you hear that, people? The waiting will stop? That’s great to hear. Now our agony will shift from the pain of not knowing if we’re ever going to get a sequel to dying from anticipation.
Of course, we have no idea what the plot will be. And as for the title, Joss told audiences at a 2009 Dr. Horrible screening in New York City that the sequel will be called “Dr. Horrible 2: Penny’s Still Dead.” (He’s lying. He does that.)
Note: For fans who are only familiar with the webcast, you might want to get your talons on the DVD: instead of the typical chatty movie commentary, the cast and crew sing. Songs in Commentary! The Musical include a delightful number by Dr. Horrible co-writer Maurissa Tancharoen: “Nobody’s Asian in the Movies.”
