Darth Maul appeared in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace as a whirling dervish of destruction before he was cut down by Obi-Wan Kenobi. But other than the fact that he knows his wushu and that he managed to survive Obi Wan’s lightsaber justice, we don’t know much about Maul.

Leave it to fan filmmaker Shawn Bu to fill in those sad blanks in our Sith Lord history. In the short film “Darth Maul: Apprentice,” Bu speculates on how Maul progressed through his apprenticeship with Darth Sidious. Spoilers: It involves a lot of killing.

The plot is simple enough. Maul needs to protect the secret that the Sith exist, are in hiding, and are growing strong. It’s up to Maul to destroy everyone he encounters.

To no one’s surprise, he encounters Jedi.

With top-notch special effects, and even more topper-notchier choreography, everyone involved in this production knows how to give and take a punch (and a Force Push). But it’s the acting that makes this fan film stand out. A shout-out to Ben Schamma, the actor who managed to channel the Sith’s contempt and rage.

At last, he has his revenge.

NOTE: According to Slashfilm, it took two years for the production to become an actual film. Their labor of love is documented here.
