TV shows based on comic books have been superheating the airwaves into plasma for a few years now. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. Arrow. Agent Carter. And those are just the shows that begin with A. Now there’s a new comic book-based TV show on the horizon, and it could be pure awesome. It’s Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger.
Cloak and Dagger, who made their first appearance in Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man #64 (March 1982) and moved to their own series, are Ty Johnson and Tandy Bowen, respectively. While Tandy is a rich white girl and Ty is a poor African-American boy, both are runaways. They find themselves imbued with special powers, which they use to fight crime.
According to Variety,
“The live-action interracial romance follows the duo, two teenagers from very different backgrounds, who find themselves burdened and awakened to newly acquired superpowers while falling in love — Tandy can emit light daggers and Tyrone has the ability to engulf others in darkness. They quickly learn they are better together than apart, but their feelings for each other make their already complicated world even more challenging.”
When Cloak and Dagger first appeared in 1982, their relationship was strictly friend-zoned. But with the 21st century kicking racism a little harder in the ass, a romance between the two seems a natural evolution of their circumstances.
After 11 issues, Cloak and Dagger was folded into Strange Tales, and all told, the characters ran for 49 issues. Subsequently, they’ve made appearances in other comic books, limited series, and one-shots.
The television show will be airing some time in 2017 on Freeform, which currently airs Shadowhunters and Stitchers.
